Enter the smoky, psychedelic haze of Perseus Noble — a mysterious new project born deep in the desert of California when frontman Justin Bushman and his brother hid to escape some trouble in San Diego. We’ll never know exactly what happened on their mystical vision quest but they offer haunting glimpses into the power of the desert, like “must respect the creator / and offer him blood to taste,” and at other times deliver brooding messages to ex-girlfriends, like “this is the life you chose / frozen and alone.” When the two emerged from the desert they sought out help from members of Royce to build up the songs in their analog hideaway on Chicago’s south side, the Shape Shoppe studio. The result is a stony blend of fuzzed out guitars, sexy Rhodes, swirling synth sounds, and slamming 70s-style breakbeats that could easily provide samples for future hip hop songs. It delivers just enough variation on style to sound timeless in a vintage way and just enough shoegaze to keep you blissed out.
