For the past 10 years on Halloween, Chicago band Detholz! has played a Jukebox of the Dead show, wherein they put their own particular spin on well known songs.
As Tribune critic Greg Kot wrote “This quintet takes on the seemingly irredeemable….and reconstructs it into something alluringly strange.”
In celebration of their decade long tradition, the Detholz! opened up their archives to us, and let us cull through a host of unreleased recordings and alternate takes to come up with a two cassette box set comprising the following hot jamz and more!!
Jim DeRogatis at the Sun Times writes: “What is the “Jukebox of the Dead,” you ask? Detholz! describes it as a “slate of deconstructed, ‘maxio-facialized’ pop covers–songs one might hear over a tinny speaker at the dentist’s office, completely amputated, resewn and rearranged–and a dark rumination on the lives and unlives of American celebrities,” though even that wordy precise doesn’t really do it justice.”
